maximize the probability that he would be able to observe, interpret, and follow the omens. In order to follow his Personal Legend and grow, he had to be able to read the omens laid out for him. This could be done much more easily in the vast openness of the desert than any other environment because if an omen were to appear to Santiago, its presence would be much more dominant. Since nature itself brings forth omens and since Santiago is traversing a desert, the presence of nature is so dominant, he could clearly understand the omens in his path. When out for a walk, Santiago witnesses two hawks fighting and an accompanying vision of the oasis being invaded. Coelho writes, “An army, with its swords at the ready, riding into the oasis. The vision vanished immediately, but it had shaken him.” (Coelho 100). Santiago grew to trust the omens of the desert and came to learn that everything in life can be an omen, but only to one who is willing to understand them. In learning to interpret omens, Santiago could more successfully pursue his Personal Legend. Throughout the novel Santiago encounters many diverse and intriguing characters, who through their interactions grow Santiago as a person. From a wise old king to a mysterious alchemist who could turn lead into gold, they each played a crucial

role in strengthening his character. Encounters like these were unique to the particular setting Santiago was in. At the start of Santiago’s journey the old king provided him with the necessary directions that he needed in order to achieve his Personal Legend. Through their interaction, the king allowed Santiago to understand omens and one's Personal Legend, thus, equipping Santiago with the necessary tools for his journey. The king tells him, “One’s personal legend is what you have always wanted to accomplish. Everyone, when they are young, knows what their personal legend is.” (Coelho 21). If it
