I cannot improve it — it never will be improved. I am,therefore, not to indulge it, or attend to its desires, or treatit otherwise than as something done with and set aside. But as long as we are down here, this evil self is stillthere; and though it is true the new man is perfect, thatdoes not improve the old nature; on the contrary, justbecause the new manisperfect, he sees and understandshow evil the old nature is, and the believer condemnshimself the more, the more he makes use of the light andgrace which, as a new creature in Christ Jesus, hepossesses. He condemnshimselfbecause he is the personin whom these two natures are; and heoughtalways toact according to the new, not according to the old. Morethan this, hehaspower to refuse and deny the desires ofthe old nature, and is left without excuse when he givesway to them. And even if he does not give way to them, the very desire is sin, and needs nothing short of theblood of Christ to blot it out of God’s sight. There are, therefore, two ways of shutting our eyes to our ownsinfulness. One is to say, “I cannot help sinning,” whichis not true, if we are really believers, strengthened withall might according to God’s glorious power; the other isto say that avoidingactsof sin is a perfect state. If wewere perfect, we should never have to avoid sin, anymore than if you were walking through a solitary desertyou would have to avoid bad company. Christ had no sinto avoid, and He was the only perfect man who was everon this earth. Moreover, Christ in heaven is the only145

Wesley’s thoughtof perfection must, therefore, have been different fromGod’s thought of it. I am sorry to have to tell you of themistakes of so faithful a servant of God, but as it isneedful to give you atrueaccount as far as possible, thiscannot be helped. Let us rejoice that there is a timecoming when God’s people really will be perfect. “WhenHe shall appear, we shall be like Him, for we shall seeHim as He is.” And “He shall present the Church toHimself a glorious Church, not having spot or wrinkle, orany such thing, “but it shall be holy and withoutblemish.”146

The Story of John WesleyFamily BereavementsIn the spring of 1741, George Whitefield came backfrom America, and John Wesley went to talk to him.Whitefield spoke very plainly to him, and told him hecould no longer join him in preaching, and that he shouldfeel it right to warn those to whom he preached againstthe two errors I have told you about. It is very sad when Satan thus divides God’s people bybringing in errors and misunderstandings of God’s truth;but in such cases it is wrong to “agree to differ,” aspeople often say. Those who are speaking according toGod’s mind are right in showing the errors of those whodiffer from it, however painful it may be to do so. PeterBöhler came to England about the same time, and Wesleyhad a long talk with him, which, he said, “made his heartburn within him;” but still Peter could not convince himthat he was wrong.
