and behavioral problems”(Western & Pettit). This tells us that boys that are children of a incarcerated parent have a higher chance of having problems with their behavior or have a hard time developing like kids around the same age group. This negatively affects not only the child but the parent as well because no parent wants to hear that their child is doing bad because of them and because they are not physically there to support them while they are going through a hard time. A reason that boys feel the need to act out and behave badly is because when they lack that role model figure in their life they feel lost and don’t know how to go about certain situations. It comes from a feeling of hurt from not having that person with them and knowing that, that person is going through a hard time themselves.

Ali 7 Children are not the only ones affected by this. Woman who are in a relationship with a man who is serving time in prison have a hard time adjusting to that new change in their life without their significant other. In the article “Consequences for Family and Children” it says Relationship problems of the incarcerated are attributable to several factors. First, women grow weary of the time, energy, and money required to maintain a relationship with an incarcerated partner. Studies find that while family members often view their role as one of moral and emotional support, making regular visits and phone calls and sending letters and packages to prisoners can be difficult and costly , particularly when visits require long-distance travel and hours of waiting . Second, women may undergo emotional strain from not knowing what their partner is experiencing while incarcerated or from feeling socially excluded”. Incarceration can cause separation between a husband and a wife or a boyfriend and a girlfriend. Nobody wants their significant other in jail. Not only is a lot of money being wasted on them but they are not able to see them on a normal basis and they have to live with the fact that they have to sleep at night in a room while their loved one is sleeping in a cell behind bars. Overall, being with a person who is serving time or being related to them can cause emotional strain. Not only is it financially hard to support someone who is incarcerated it is also mentally hard not having that person with you by your side to support and love you. This separation between these people cause relationships to breakup and fall apart. When this happens a significant other is likely to move on from the relationship causing the person who is doing time to feel unwanted and neglected causing more stress than they already have. With a child it’s the same thing but the roles are reversed and the child is the one who feels neglected and hurt by their parents actions.
