me while they screamed in my face, believing they were confronting the Demon of Perversion inside me. It was during the Deliverance that I realized this wasn’t working. I was still gay. Before they could finish the Deliverance, I stopped them. I left the room wailing as the lead pastor yelled after me, “You just chose hell.” 12 Although more and more states are beginning to realize how dire the reality of conversion therapy is, there are those who still believe it will work, such as Vice President of the United States Mike Pence. There are many other forms of violence towards LGBTQ+ individuals such as microaggressions, cyber-bullying, sexual abuse, etc. The sad fact that SMY must be in constant fear of their own safety in the places that are supposed to be their safest like school, home, and church is something most adults or heterosexual youth do not realize until they have faced first hand. Because of this, bringing the sensitivity of SMY safety to light so that others may understand is key in protecting our youth. PHYSICAL HEALTH Physical health is a particularly broad subject, encompassing everything that has to do with a person’s physical state and potential harm to that state. While keeping youth safe is always a concern in society, it has always been of much less importance when it comes to SMY. Combined with the increased risk of harm for SMY, this leads to higher rates in physical harm from sources such as drug/tobacco abuse, homelessness, and lack of support from primary physicians. Most do not know that drug and tobacco use is more common in LGBTQ+ youth. Although there is no direct correlation meaning “being gay makes you more susceptible to abuse drugs,” the stressful environments in which the community faces makes it easier to access and (unfortunately) an effective coping mechanism. No one, especially people who smoke, denies that cigarettes are bad for you. The problem is that it is so addictive that it really does not matter what it is doing to the body because mentally it calms them down. This kind of lowkey depressor is exactly what people need in times of stressful situations. option. One in every four LGBTQ+ individuals smoke, compared to one in six heterosexual adults. This 13 difference is not a coincidence however, since it is proven that tobacco companies use guerilla marketing to attract the community. Tobacco companies like Newport have targeted Pride Festivals and homeless 14 LGBTQ+ youth, like the SCUM (Sub-Culture Urban Marketing) Project. Other studies have found 15 direct ties between homophobic teasing and substance abuse such as alcohol, marijuana, and illicit drug use. 1617 Youth are highly dependant on parents/guardians, which makes “coming out” a difficult task for many. One of the biggest risks of coming out and being rejected is losing a place to live. Sexual Minorities is one of the largest groups to comprise homeless youth. According to a study done by the University of Chicago, LGBT youth are 120% more likely to be homeless than heterosexual youth.
