by a four-point-scale and responses can only be made with reference to four-time frames: entire life, past 6 months, 6 months before, or 6 months since (Lazowski, 1998). The SASSI-3 which only takes 15 minutes to complete can be taken via computer or on paper. This assessment wouldallow the clinician to determine if Derek is a substance abuser or substance dependent. The SASSI-3 has a reliability score of 0.93 and 97 percent validity (Lazowski, 1998). The Addiction Severity Index is a 200- item standardized assessment that can assess the following several areas of an individual’s life: medical status, employment and support, drug use, alcohol use, legal status, family/social status, and psychiatric status (Innovative Training Systems, 1999). The assessment evaluates the problem severity of the individual and is also usedto monitor and quantify change in problems commonly associated with substance abuse (Innovative Training Systems, 1999). The test takes approximately 50 minutes can be administered by paper, by a clinician on via computer (Innovative Training Systems, 1999). This assessment would allow the therapist to have a more in depth look into the issues that are happening with Derek. The downside of the ASI is there are gaps of information regarding area of social stressors and substance consumption that could be utilized (Morgen, 2017).Applicability of Assessments to Diverse PopulationsWhile it may be a developer’s desire to create fair assessment instruments for all individuals, sometimes that is not possible (Whiston, 2017). An individual’s worldview influences how they perceive information and influences not only what is learned but also how

In order for assessments to work effectively with diverse clients, counselors need to understand differences in worldview. The SASSI-3 model is not as diverse as it could be base on research. According to research completed by Thomas (2012), The accuracy of the SASSI is not significantly affected by gender, age, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, occupational status, marital status, educational level, drug of choice, and generallevel of functioning. Additionally, Thomas states that the improvement of accuracy and usefulness is still ongoing (Innovative Training Systems, 1999). Differential DiagnosisDifferential diagnosis is the beginning component of every treatment plan. Therapist are responsible for determining which disorders are possible candidates for consideration and then choose from among them the disorder that best fits the presenting symptoms (APA, 2014).The DSM-5 includes 29 symptom-oriented decision trees that provides decision points for determining which diagnosis may best the clients concerns (APA, 2014). The decision that wouldbest fit Derek’s need would the decision tree for Stimulant Use Disorder. Derek has shown a problematic pattern of substance use that has cause significant distress which can be seen in his behavior. However he is not presenting with psychiatric symptoms due to direct physiological effects of abuse of a substance which classifies as Stimulant Use Disorder.
