of poverty compared to little over half of white children Findings suggest that both macro context and family level context of poverty should be considered in studies of maltreatment Black children had higher rates of both family and community poverty across all subcategories of neglect examined **ISABELLA***Coulton, C. What neighborhood/family social processes might explain the link between neighborhood structural factors and risk for maltreatment **AFSHANA**Azar, S. T., & Weinzierl, K. M. (2005). Child maltreatment and childhood injury research: A cognitive behavioral approach. Journal of Pediatric Psychology, 30 , 598-614. There are 3 parts of the CBT model: Maladaptive schema, Deficits in executive function, Negative appraisals of child behavior. Understand what each of these mean. CBT refers to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Maladaptive Scheme : They more strongly believe that punishment is what a parent “should do” and that power-assertive strategies will be effective and that inductive ones will be less effective They have a role definition of parenting that requires them to have absolute control over their children Schemas are information structures that exist before a new stimulus is encountered, and they have both structural elements and content. Deficits in executive functions : What is executive functioning: Executive functioning involves capacities to perceive stimuli in the environment in complex enough ways to identify problems when they occur, emotionally regulate and inhibit responses, generate specific responses to those problems, prioritize, enact

responses effectively, and evaluate the outcomes that result and adjust one’s behavior when responses are not effective. Physically abusive as well as neglectful mothers show poorer problem- solving capacities in both child rearing and non child rearing situations intellectually low functioning parents are poorer problem solvers in childrearing situations, and the level of their deficit is associated with less synchrony in their interactions with their preschool children Negative appraisals of child behavior: Abusive mothers and ones identified as at-risk for being abusive expect less compliance from their children after disciplining them and judge child transgressions in many situations as more “wrongful” and their behavior generally as more negative, problematic, less adaptable, more conduct- disordered, more temperamental, more aggressive, and more hyperactive Maladaptive appraisals have been shown to increase parental anger and risk of punitive behavior, as well as lax parenting.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
