which would otherwise have occurred due to total lack of attention, would be avoided., when a routine is defined, its ruling, say, a decision to service a particular set of machinery every fifteenth day, has to suffice and hold good for the maintenance staff, ignoring all past records, data, and actual needs. While establishing a routine system, we do not take into consideration the details and the needs of the machine. We establish an average service interval that can be implemented, taking into account our total manpower and the machines which have to be taken care of, for example, whether the tail rotor bearing of a helicopter need grassing and oiling after every 10 hours of flying time, and the main gear box after every 25 years of flying; if this difference is ignored, both will be serviced only after 15 calendar days. Hence, blanket orders to service, lubricate, rectify, adjust are given and no checklists are prepared. It may be noted that this has to be supported by a separate crew who would only be repairing the defects. The basic

136 difference is the routine servicing does not cater to the needs or the expected requirements of the machine. This is far better than the breakdown maintenance system. However, as we can see, it is not a fine-tuned method for fulfilling differential levels of maintenance needs. 10.3.2.3 Planned Maintenance Planned maintenance is maintenance organized and carried out with forethought, control, and records, to a predetermined plan. In the planned maintenance system, the emphasis is on the machine’s needs, and the expected requirements from the, machine. It has to be centered on the original recommendations made and prescribed by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM). The maintenance manager has to use all his experience and expertise to superimpose refinements and improvements on the manufacturer’s recommendations. However, in doing this, the following factors have to be kept in mind. I. THE EXTENT OF UTILIZATION. This means that whether this unit or machine is working for one, two or three shifts a day, every day, that is to say 365 days in a year, or it is being used sparingly? II. SEVERITY OF UTILIZATION. That is, the machine working under normal load conditions or not, and are the other conditions of operations being adhered to, which have been prescribed and visualized by the manufacturer? III. OPERATING CONDITIONS. Depending upon the condition under which the operations re taking place, such as the degree of corrosiveness, humidity, temperature, dust, snow, or heavy rains, which the machine has to content with, the question arises. Is more attention being paid to counter balance the pernicious effect of the prevailing environment? This question conditions will have a different bearing on the type of attention each machine will need to maintain it in a serviceable condition.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
