Figure 3. Percentage percentage of all crime classifications in Leeds for the months of April and May from 2015-2020 [ CITATIONDat20 \l 1033 ]Looking at the crime rates from April 2015 until May 2020, as shown below in Figure 4, the rate ofviolence and sexual offences is considered to be higher than the average. The average fluctuatesbetween 2000 to 2500 crimes per month, but it is evident from Figure 4 that at the beginning of thelockdown in April 2020, there has been a significant plummet in the rate of crime, dropping to 2500from 3000. But with the extension of the lockdown for the second month (May), the rate began torise again, reaching 3000, as it was before the decline.20
Figure 4. Crime rate for the period 2015-2020 and average crime during 2015-2029.In contrast to violence and sexual offences, the crimes rates of burglary were below average thisyear, and it can be safely declared that the first quarter of the year saw lesser burglary crimes thanprevious years. The crime rate for 2020 is declining, as is the case with violence, but the burglaryrate during the lockdown has significantly plummeted in April, and rose slightly in May, as seen inFigure 5.Figure 5. Crime rate for the period 2015-2020 and average crime during 2015-2029The crime rates during the period of this study can be found below in Figure 6. It is observed thatthe trend line for both crimes in the period 2015-2019 in April and May continues to rise, especiallywith violence and sexual offences, in a significant manner at a continuous rate. On the other hand, burglary has increased slightly and seen mild fluctuations throughout the period of study. But byusing the data to produce a trend line for the whole period from 2015-2020 April and May (with aperiod of lockdown due to Corona), it becomes clear that the regression line has changed; so themonthly rate slightly fluctuates between high and low. And in the case of violence and sexualoffences, it continues to increase. The trend line has dropped below average in comparison to theperiod before lockdown, but the trend line continues to rise gradually.21
Figure 6 Line graph predicting and comparing crime rate during 2015-2019 and 2015-2020 during lockdown.4.1 Classification Cluster:This section will focus on cluster analysis that was built in the methodology section. The city wasdivided into four clusters, each having distinct characteristics. Accordingly, it was named after itsdominant features. However, it is important to note that not every cluster has a relationship with all22
the crimes, as some of them are related to one or two types of crimes and some of them have anopposite relationship, as will be explained later in this study. The radar shape scale ranges from -3to 3, where zero is the average as show in Figure 7. There are four variables that reached a highdeviation rate and were essential in naming the group, namely, Black Ethnicity, Full Time Students,Muslim and Private Rented, as shown in Table 10.
