well-rounded APN. I hope to someday work within my own professional practice, and at this time that means I will not be working forever in the state of Illinois. Illinois does not allow APNs to practice on their own and therefore I will not remain in this state. I do plan to begin my
APN PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN 5 professional work here in the state of Illinois, and I do feel this will give me a chance to learn and advance my knowledge and skills as an APN, while working within a collaborative agreement with a physician. Healthcare is a stressful environment to work in. I hope to gain necessary skills to reduce the stress of the environment I work within as an APN. Personally, knowing the appropriate ways to approach conflict, maintaining an open mind to change, and working as a professional leader are areas I strive to excel in as an APN. These are all situations that will advance the environment I work in and in turn will increase the safety and satisfaction for both my patients as well as those I work with and around daily. “A positive work environment results in decreased job and physiologic stress, burnout, and nursing errors as well as increased job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and productivity.” (Woten, & Schub, 2015) Working as an effective nursing leader, will create a positive work environment encouraging others to be motivated, inspired, and supported to achieve organizational goals. Networking and Marketing Strategies There are a number of professional organizations in the state of Illinois, both on the local and national level. These organizations work towards offering continuing education opportunities, collaborative opportunities and much more to work towards the advancement in professional career opportunities for APNs. The Society of Advanced Practice Nursing (ISAPN) is one networking facility which provides a number of continuing education programs for APNs. The ISAPN offers various opportunities to collaborate with outside professionals and organizations which supports legislation relating to Advanced Practice Nurses. A number of educational conferences and seminars relating to issues faced by APNs and other health professionals, are offered through the ISAPN. In terms of job marketing, the ISAPN website
APN PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN 6 provides a career tab in which perspective employers post job opportunities for various positions in the state of Illinois. By joining this organization, APNs networking and marketing is advanced. The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) is another helpful organization. This organization is on the national level and offers a number of opportunities to assist in advancing and excelling in the APN profession. Just like the ISAPN, continuing education is one example of what they have to offer. The AANP offers student resources such as certification programs and professional development training opportunities as well. Research opportunities such as conferences, and seminars focused on the career market are made available nationally as well. Nurse practitioners can benefit by becoming involved with a number of networking and marketing organizations, like the ones mentioned. These organizations will help the APN in advancing both their professional development skills as well as helping them to grow in areas such as leadership, policy development, and work towards improving the overall quality in healthcare practice.
