is accommodating, but the lower-level staff (paralegals, lit support, etc.) can balk at changes in their routines.” • “You have to actively seek a community as you didn’t come in with a class of other associates.” OUR SURVEY SAYS Vault’s Verdict: Reed Smith associates enjoy the purposeful mentoring, a close-knit culture, and opportunities for career growth, including a realistic shot at becoming partner. However, recent layoffs and below-market salaries are having an impact on associate morale. Satisfaction • “This is the right place to work if you want to have balance. Reed Smith pays about 10% below market rate, but there’s a respect for your time, your vacations, your childcare schedule, etc., that is priceless.” • “I’m very pleased with the level of responsibility I have been given from the start. It is up to the individual to seek out work and build relationships, but this has provided me the opportunity to experience a broad range of work that I find exciting.” • “Current atmosphere at RS has been tumultuous since 2016. Layoffs, considerable attrition, lack of retention initiatives and management changes have made this firm an undesirable place to work, but the people that remain are still awesome and we support each other (associates, staff and FSPs).” • “Because of firm attrition I have had the opportunity to take on more substantive work. However, the firm overall does not show investment in its higher ranked associates financially due to unwarranted compensation compression.” Firm Culture • “I find Reed Smith to have a uniquely friendly, welcoming and sincere culture. While there isn’t a strong management structure, the leadership truly makes an effort to listen to younger associates and to foster a culture of concern for attorneys, staff, clients, and society as a whole.” • “Firm events are only periodic, but our practice group is excellent at building camaraderie.” • “I like my colleagues themselves, but the social, collegial atmosphere is nearly nonexistent. This office in particular has an emphasis on getting attorneys involved in external organizations, like boards, but there is a general lack of care about morale and having attorneys interact within the office.” • “Great open-floor workflow policy. Allows associates to pick and choose assignments, and develop an organic pro- fessional track.” Associate/Partner Relations • “Partners are very easy going, and genuinely seem to appreciate giving feedback on assignments. I do not get any transparency on firm leadership or finances.” • “The partners I work for are great and do their best to pass information along. The firm as a whole could be better about getting information out there.” • “Most people are nice—you won’t find many screamers or outright jerks. However, as it relates to transparency, the firm takes its time in announcing anything that has to do with promotion and pay increases—about a 3 month lag behind its peer firms.”

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
