Alvarez 2 (paragraph 3). This narrator allows us to know what is going on in Madame Loisel’s life while also letting the readers know how she feels in every situation that she is in. The readers can go into her mind without having the first person point of view. With this, we know that she is not satisfied with the current life she is living. The readers have already been informed about Madame Loisel’s opinion on her current living conditions in her home with her husband early on in the story. “She suffered deeply from her wretched apartment, from its dingy walls, worn-out chairs, and ugly upholstery” (paragraph 3). That alone allows the readers to know that she is obsessed with the outer appearance of anything more than anything. Believing that she had been born into the wrong social class, she got very upset when she found out she and her husband were invited to an important social gathering with upper class people. She asked her husband “And what do you expect me to wear?” (paragraph 12) implying the fact that she had no decent dresses to wear at such an event, according to her.
