Concerning the Scriptures, Peter explains his ministry to the people in light of the scriptures. We often read in 2 Peter of the instances as explained to emphasise on certain events that happen to draw attention to a lesson to be learned. Other themes for this letter can be discerned in the midst of Peter’s polemic against the false teachers. He wanted to motivate his readers to continue to develop their Christian character (1:5–11). In so doing, he explains wonderfully how a believer can have assurance of his salvation. Peter also wanted to persuade his readers of the divine character of the apostolic writings (1:12–21). Near the end of the letter, he presents reasons for the delay in Christ’s second coming (3:1–13). Throughout the book of 2 Peter, we see the writer use certain illustrations from of the Old Testament regarding godlessness, to remind the people of that time of the kind of life which has God’s approval. The first example we read about is the Flood in Genesis 6, God didn’t spare the ungodly people – He destroyed them for their hearts were wicked. God used Noah and rescued him and seven others, to set an example and to be his messenger of the relationship God wants with his people. Peter also mentions in his letter that the water baptism is a way of cleansing your conscience and he refers to the Flood in Genesis as God wiped clean the earth to cleanse the earth of wickedness. The second example is the destruction of the two cities, Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19). God Saved Lot, with his wife and his two daughters. Although Peter mentioned this illustration I choose to believe it was merely more than just an example. I believe Peter mentioned Sodom and Gomorrah, because of the fact that although the angels told them what to do, they still did as they pleased. Lot’s 15

wife turned around to have a look even though they were told not to and then Lot’s two daughters’ gets overwhelmed with fear and has intercourse with their father, to fall pregnant. Conclusion In this essay I discussed the historical context of which I looked at authorship, date it was written, the authenticity of the book as well as the audience. Concerning the literary context, I discussed the structure, use of figurative speech / language and the significance of the book of James. Lastly concerning the theological themes, I discussed the response to the background of James’ theology, compare and show relationship between Paul and James’s teachings, discussed aspects of living by faith and firm warnings concerning social classes. Regarding 1 and 2 Peter’s themes, I discussed the household codes, the concept of the hidden Jesus, wrote a paper on 1 Peter 3:18-22, with regard to Genesis 6:1-6.
