Concerning the Scriptures, Peter explains his ministry to the people in light ofthe scriptures. We often read in 2 Peter of the instances as explained toemphasise on certain events that happen to draw attention to a lesson to belearned. Other themes for this letter can be discerned in the midst of Peter’s polemicagainst the false teachers. He wanted to motivate his readers to continue todevelop their Christian character (1:5–11). In so doing, he explainswonderfully how a believer can have assurance of his salvation. Peter alsowanted to persuade his readers of the divine character of the apostolicwritings (1:12–21). Near the end of the letter, he presents reasons for thedelay in Christ’s second coming (3:1–13).Throughout the book of 2 Peter, we see the writer use certain illustrationsfrom of the Old Testament regarding godlessness, to remind the people ofthat time of the kind of life which has God’s approval. The first example weread about is the Flood in Genesis 6, God didn’t spare the ungodly people –He destroyed them for their hearts were wicked. God used Noah andrescued him and seven others, to set an example and to be his messenger ofthe relationship God wants with his people. Peter also mentions in his letter that the water baptism is a way of cleansingyour conscience and he refers to the Flood in Genesis as God wiped cleanthe earth to cleanse the earth of wickedness. The second example is thedestruction of the two cities, Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19). God SavedLot, with his wife and his two daughters. Although Peter mentioned thisillustration I choose to believe it was merely more than just an example. I believe Peter mentioned Sodom and Gomorrah, because of the fact thatalthough the angels told them what to do, they still did as they pleased. Lot’s15
