much now) (OR YOU COULD HAVE A STRONG ALLY, example Serbia’s alliance with Russia) - Now, sovereignty is based more on recognition because of international alliances like the UN - You need a resolution from the UN to become sovereign now

- Some places won’t ever be sovereign because UN Security Council (US, UK, China, Russia, France - the UN P5) - Every resolution must pass through this group, and all of them have veto power. (if ONE of the 5 vetos, you aren’t a state) - Example: Taiwan, Kosovo, Texas(lol) - Sovereignty is up in the air right now because of genocide - Genocide - deliberate destruction of a certain group of people that that group is completely wiped off the earth (or at least they try to) - The League of Nations started after WW1 and didn’t work because many states (US) didn’t join - The UN is the premier international institution that deescalates disputes - When Iraq invades Kuwait the UN the world took care of Suddam Hussein States #2 - 192-193 states , east timor to become the 193rd - 1-2 dozen places in the world that have their own territory - 1) Ones that may actually become states (Palestine, Greenland) - 2) Possible future states (Scotland, Quebec) - 3) Places violently trying to be a state (Chechenia, Basque, Transnistria, Kurds) - 4) Places that can never be states (Taiwan (because of China), Kosovo (Milosevic genocide of Kosovo, US and UN came in and intervened. Basically Serbia and Russia against everybody else), South Ossetia, Abkhazia - China #1 fan of sovereignty because they don’t want anybody to threaten their sovereignty, they also have troublesome ethnic minorities (Tibet and Taiwan) - 2008 Russia/Georgia war, Russia invaded Ossetia and Abkhazia after defending them - Biggest sovereignty supporters - China, Russia (used to be), Spain, any country with small ethnic minorities that may petition to become their own sovereign states, Sudan, Burma, North Korea - Sovereignty currently unraveling because of ideologies (like the war on drugs)and because states are now invading other sovereign states to protect small ethnic minorities - Africa - no - South Africa - yes - Tibet - no - Tajikistan - yes - Greenland - no - Somalia - yes - Middle East - no - East Timor - yes - Palau - yes -
