Westward Expansion 3 In 1862 Abraham Lincoln signed an act into fruition that gave millions of acres of land owned by the government, to new settlers. This act was called The Homestead Act of 1862. It was, like most acts, controversial. The act was passed fairly easily, but had many people weary. Some were worried about how accessible their land would be, and others, such as the Natives, worried about their lands being over populated with outsiders whom could deplete their resources. Prior to the passing of this act, most southerners seen it as nothing but a benefit for African Americans. Despite many efforts from political figures and some citizens, the legislation was passed.
