What offenses are to be punished or investigated? If Christians repent for being Christian, are they still liable for punishment? (What is the real crime of being Christian?) What determines a Christian? Is it the state of being a Christian that is the crime, or certain acts that Christians perform that cause them to be criminals. Pliny executed those who had confessed to being Christian. Excused only those who cursed Christ, or performed Roman traditional sacrifices. Christians are to be persecuted when found out or revealed by their own will, but not sought after and actively persecuted. Literary representations of martyrdom: Cork transcripts? Usually involve Christians being dragged in and stating that they are Christians. Government officials would try to get christians to renounce their ways and reform as decent Roman citizens, the christians would refuse and would be executed. Narratives which depict more detailed and intimate accounts of martyrs. Martyr accounts written in the late 2 nd and 3 rd century are very gory and detailed with the aspects of torture. More heroic, courageous, and impervious to pain the martyrs are. The persecutors use more brutal methods which are described with more details. Fantastical and amazing accounts. Literary tropes within accounts of martyrdom. Coincidences and symbolism within the accounts.
