c c (T f – T i ) 3. PROCEDURE Equipment needed in order to perform the experiment: double walled calorimeter of outer and inner aluminum cups, heating coil with stirrer, single hole rubber stopper, DC power supply, analog
ammeter, analog voltmeter, thermometer, electrical connection cables, stopwatch, 100 ml graduated cylinder, and balance. Connect the voltmeter to the terminals of the heating coil and then connect the output of the DC power supply, the ammeter, and the heating coil in series. To begin the experiment measure the mass (mc) of the empty inner cup of the calorimeter. Fill the cup with 250ml of cold water and measure the mass (mw + mc). Place the filled cup in the calorimeter and place a lid with a heating coil and stirrer on the calorimeter. Next turn on the power source and adjust the voltage so that the ammeter reads approximately 1.5 amps. Record the measured voltage level of the voltmeter. Take the thermometer and place it through the single hole rubber stopper, read and record the initial temperature of the water (Ti). Turn the power supply back on and leave it running for 30 minutes, be sure to record the ammeter and voltmeter reading every 2 minutes. Finally record the final temperature of the water (Tf).
