terrestrial species died out. Coal formation (forms from plant material) o Vegetation accumulates in anoxic (O2-poor) setting. o The absence of oxygen retards decay of organic matter. o Sea level rises, buries vegetation under clastic sediments. o As the plants die and get buried, they compact o With time and more compaction, almost all of the water is lost o Compaction and heat turn plant debris into coal. o Compaction of the peat due to burial drives off volatile components like water and methane, eventually leaving behind carbon (C). Simplified Coal formation o Plants grow in swamp environment, it floods, the sediments bury the plant and they compact o Heat turns them into coal and the coal leaves carbon behind. o Coal is found in beds called seams , usually ranging in thickness from 0.5 to 3m, although some seams reach 30 m. Formation of Coal The Formation of Coal Involves Several Steps: o Formation of Peat

Swamps are areas where organic matter from plants accumulate. As the plants die and get buried, they compact to become peat. With time and more compaction, almost all of the water is lost and three different grades of coal result. o Formation of Lignite Coal Compaction of the peat due to burial drives off volatile components like water

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
