effectively follows them inside” (Bosniak 4). When the “alien within” (Bosniak) slips beyond the militaristic barriers of a border territory, s/he must contend with the figurative borders operating within the national imaginary. There is a connection between the dominant discourses that are used at geographic borders and the social/relational borders at work within the US nation-state: for example, white supremacy is used to mark some racialized bodies as always foreign and others as intrinsically “American”;5 heterosexual supremacy is used to ensure that genderconforming, sex-conforming heterosexuals are given access to legal and social rights while persons who are lesbian, gay, or transgender are socially stigmatized and denied entry to the United States or denied legal sanctions; ableism is used to assert the normalcy of particular embodiments and bodily functions while simultaneously pathologizing, institutionalizing, and denying entry to those with disabilities; and so forth.
