recommendations of these ideas to the relevant management such as the nurse manager,
supervisor or even more, submitting an idea to the a legislative body; senate or house of
representative. Advocating for other nurses also is important, in order to get better working
conditions and adequate resources. One strategy that can be used is forming coalitions, by
working together with others leaders who have common positive interest to create changes.
“Nursing organizations can build political strength by forming coalitions with other people and
other groups. Building coalitions requires the identification of potential collaborators and
knowledge about the political environment. Once credibility is built, members gather together to
lobby legislators to give support for bills the coalition wants to see passed” (Helbig, 2018).
One instance where I provided leadership was being a charge nurse, and having to oversee other
nurses and integrate and guide nursing students was a great opportunity. However, I don’t think I
was the best leader I could be because I was one year out of nursing school and felt like I myself
still needed guidance. I had not yet learn what leader I am and what leadership styles I
appreciated more. However, I grew by being open to learning from others and worked together
with the team in a democratic fashion, taking into consideration the ideas and opinions of all staff
and working together to achieve goals. Now, pursuing higher education by doing my BSN, will
help in the future in any higher leadership role I adapt.
