o not everyone who has been colonized is subaltern o all of India was colonized by Britain, but not everyone in India was subaltern o subalterns (people in rural communities, the Untouchables, etc.) don’t get any representation in the Indian government o subaltern = the groups who have no official political representation all American women were subaltern until they got the right to vote “[T]he possibility of collectivity itself is persistently foreclosed through the manipulation of female agency” (283). means the collective action of subaltern women the way in which women are represented to themselves as not a collective group ex. think about Hooks’ essay o she says that African American women avoid forming a collective group because what’s in their interests has been represented to them as being racism o as long as they believe that, they are subjects of both sexism and racism o being pulled in two different directions white men are protecting brown women from brown men “How can we touch the consciousness of the people, even as we investigate their politics? With was voice- consciousness can the subaltern speak?” (284). “To confront them is not to represent ( vertreten ) them but to learn to represent ( darstellen ) ourselves” (289). argues that western intellectuals have been implicitly representing themselves as vertreten (speaking for their own political interests) under the guise of speaking for the interests of the subaltern western intellectuals haven’t accomplished the first part of this o haven’t objectively described darstellen for their own powers, interests, and desires Jacques Derrida: Representation as catachresis = giving a name to something that doesn’t have its own proper name examples of catachresis are figures of speech that we all take for granted o ex. legs of a table aren’t actually legs; therefore, we don’t really have a proper name for table legs o ex. a head of lettuce extreme examples of the catachresis inherent in all languages o all speech is a form of misnaming o

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
