Tourists seek out unique experiences and feel exempt from broader critiques because they are unique - conspicuous consumption/ ego-tourists is from two main groups: - students who are relatively poor and avoid going into debt to pay for hol- idays that they view as luxury items. They struggle to afford necessities (rent, food) - studies who are relatively poor, but view holidays and travel as a neces- sary part of their life and are very willing to go into debt to enable them to take vacations. Also more likely to wear designer clothes, spend large amounts of money on alcohol and use latest technology - travel is such an important part of cultural capital that many students are willing to go into debt to participate in unique experiences Case Studies of Volunteer Tourism in Costa Rica and Belize - one of the main categories of ego-tourist also aim to build their skills in a way that may support education and career goals - volunteer tourists are defined as: those who volunteer in an organized way to undertake holidays that might involve aiding or alleviating the material poverty of some groups in society, the restoration of certain environments or research into aspects of society or environment - motivations of volunteer tourists: - alturism: desire to benefit others or contribute to social-environmental is- sue - personal reward (ego-enhancement) - enjoyment through social interaction - desire for career/education experience - 1.6 million volunteer tourists each year - benefits for voluntourist: personal growth and reward, experience, positive, meaningful engagement with hosts -
