Rapid rise in late teenage years associated w/ rapid growth of frontal lobe External social pressure causes you to be more conscientious after teenage years Cross-cultural study was done to determine if changes are more due to biological differences or social pressures o Different countries and culture go through different milestones at different times Average age of marriage in India is 22 while average age of marriage in Sweden is 32 o Data showed increase in conscientiousness occurs earlier in countries where adult milestones occur earlier Environment works w/ biological processes to increase conscientiousness Adolescent to adulthood – less neurotic, more conscientious, better able to delay rewards o Society grants you more rights and responsibilities associated w/ being a fully adult member of society o Includes being able to vote, rent a car, drive a car, consume alcohol, get married, consent for things Development Conclusion Legal age to do things vary in different countries and vary in different states o There are lots of changes happening btwn adolescence and adulthood o Different psychological factors are not all changing at the same time or same rate Should a 14-year old be tried as an adult for committing a crime or murdering someone o Some believe that a 14-year old knows the difference btwn right and wrong and should be tried as an adult o Some believe a 14-year old may be more amenable to rehabilitation – personality is changing We may be more able to shape a 14-year old to be better in the future o Some believe a 14-year old may not have the same level of impulse control as an adult Capacity to think about moral reasoning in the abstract matures at a different rate compared to capacity to control angry impulses which develops much slower
