Garland has very irregular borders, enclosed by N. Garland Avenue on the west border, E. Miller on the south border, Castle Dr, on the east border, and has an irregular northern border. Rowlett Creek Preserve and Spring Creek Preserve can be found within its boundaries. President George Bush Turnpike and 78 are two major highways in this area. This particular area, known as Downtown Garland, is where settlers arrived “as early as the mid-1800’s” and is where the city of Garland was first founded. Older houses built in the 1950’s are more prevalent than new houses in this particular area. Due to its rich history, Garland prides itself in preservation of its historic homes. Brick houses and siding houses can be found on the same neighborhood. The majority of homes are single family housing. Although new apartments were built near the Dart Train Station, the majority of apartments in this area are older and in not pristine conditions. Common Meeting Places Where do people in the neighborhood hang out? Who hangs out there and what hours of the day ? There are various Recreations Centers such as Bradfield Recreation Center, Fields Recreation Center, and Granger Recreation where the younger crowds hang out to play basketball. There is a brewery in Downtown Garland, Intrinsic Smokehouse and Brewery, and that that is where all the 21 year olds go to hang out and listen to live music on the square. Generator Coffee on the Square in Downtown Garland provides baked sweets, fresh brewed coffee, live music, poetry readings, and wine tasting. Gyms and fitness center are also common meeting grounds. Churches offer afterschool programs for youth where they gather to participate with teens and provide counseling, support, mentoring and guidance. ● Indicators of Growth or Decline Is this a “thriving” community or does it look “run down?” Is there new or ongoing construction? Businesses and Industries coming to the area? Are buildings, roadways, and public areas clean and well- kept. Do you see dirt, trash, or graffiti ? This area of Garland is a thriving community. built near the DART train station, theatre, and the square composed of locally owned businesses. Roads have been repaired, and historic buildings are encased by new businesses. No graffiti, trash or dirt can be seen. The streets look clean, lawns mowed, and children can be seen playing outside inn their neighborhoods.
