work here?’ Mostly pretty standard interview questions.” • “Tell us about yourself, and what you like to do for fun.” Lateral & Clerk Integration • “They did a good job. I hit the ground running and people were interested in getting to know me and welcoming me into the firm.” • “More effort could be taken to integrate laterals, but we do have a decent program.” • “Firm training (processes and procedures, technology time entry, etc.) was lacking. Team was welcoming but laterals are left to figure many day-to-day procedures out on their own.” OUR SURVEY SAYS Vault’s Verdict: Kilpatrick Townsend associates say the firm’s receptiveness to alternative scheduling, commitment to pro bono, positive culture, and top-notch work make the firm a great place to work. However many associates are miffed at the confusing and below-market compensation system and lack of transparency from firm management. Satisfaction • “The work is technically and intellectually challenging. Supervising partners and associates make themselves available and offer assistance and feedback for all assignments.” • ”I have had many opportunities to work on clients and interact directly with the clients as I progress, which has helped my changes of proceeding to partnership. However, with downward client pressure on fees, and ever-increasing rates, I am always feeling incredibly stressed to produce at the same level each year. • “I like the firm a lot. There are no politics and we have lots of great attorneys—no difficult people to work with. The pay is great for the number of hours required.” • “I enjoy the work I do and most of my colleagues, but client demands provide an unpredictable schedule.” Firm Culture • “Lawyers don’t typically socialize together outside of work. There are firm happy hours and events, usually more frequent in the summer with summer associates. Also, there is a holiday dinner at a nice venue.” • “There are regular internal and external social events sponsored by the firm. About half of the external events are for attorneys only, and half of those are associates only. The remaining half of external events welcome spouses, children, and significant others more generally. It is a healthy mix of socialization.” • “We have many office-wide social functions throughout the year and have associate-specific social functions once a month.” • “The firm is friendly and laid back, but not particularly social.” Associate/Partner Relations • “The partners in my group are reasonable and are willing to have straightforward discussions with associates to help with day-to-day and career decisions. However, overall management preaches transparency, but I rarely feel like I understand how decisions are made or why, and even less like I understand the vague financial information provided.” • “Partners value associates’ input and feedback in our group.
