They have publicly committed to safe staffing through the articles they publish and public statements. The following is a statement from Pamela Cipriano, president of the ANA on safe staffing and policy (American Nurses Association, 2018). R.N. staffing makes a critical difference for patients and the quality of their care. Appropriate nurse staffing keeps patients safe and protects them from preventable complications, even lowering the risk of death. Nursing care is like medication—we would never withhold a medication when we know its lifesaving effects. The Safe Staffing for Nurse and Patient Safety Act empowers direct care nurses to determine the

Community-Based Participatory Research Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) is a partnership approach to effect change. Members are equally involved in all aspects of the research process. The three principles chosen to be used in the bottom-up approach for safe staffing for registered nurses’ policy are (Minkler, et al., n.d.): Principle 1: Community as a unit of identity. Principle 2: Builds on strengths and resources within the community. Principle 9: A long-term process and commitment. C2a. Approach and Collaboration To create a successful partnership with the American Nurses Association, I would compose an email to the local chapter association. The ANA is a wonderful source for networking and creating a group with a shared interest and goal. There are several ways to gain support from ANA members. I would ask for the topic of safe staffing to be placed on the agenda for the monthly chapter meeting and speak to the topic and policy proposal. Gaining the support of the local ANA chapter will allow for a core group that has a shared interest in job satisfaction and quality of patient care. Reaching out to the local ANA chapter provides a solid base for recruiting constituents to work on the policy. Before I can elicit the support of outside groups and communities, I must first gain the buy-in within my organization. It is important to ensure that the local ANA leadership and members can work as a united, well-informed team. The partnership with the ANA can provide resources to help identify the goals of the proposed policy

A collaborative relationship would be formed to start a grass-roots effort within the greater community and across the state of Colorado. C2b. Goal Alignment The American Nurses Association is in alignment and support of the policy proposal for safe staffing. When browsing the ANA website, one can see that their mission and values align with this proposed policy change. The ANA has long been lobbying for safe staffing for nurses.
