Did not matter, Fritsch forced out of office Two German generals present at Hitler’s meeting (who had raised concerns about Germany’s  preparedness) were ousted Foreign minster dismissed as well 3 major objectors no longer in power = total National Socialist control, easy for Hitler to  proceed Year of 1938: Hitler’s Year of Triumphs     Spring – Austria foreign policy victory Anschluss - Linkage of Austria  Absorption of Austria into Germany Austrian looking for international help – did not get it Scwushnigg Plebiscite – March 1938 Infuriated Hitler and he ordered invasion Scwushnigg forced out Austria to become a province of Germany – caught Nazis/Hitler’s entourage off guard In 1 week, 76,000 Austrians arrested Hitler’s view: Not aggression, but allowing self-determination of Austrian people b/c in  1919 Austria wanted to be part of Germany – Allie prevented this from happening No real international repercussions Hitler concerned about Czech military power Sudetenland = large German population Hitler reassured Czech of no bad intentions, but was planning aggression against Czech Sudetenland Germans encouraged by Berlin to make impossible demands on Czech  govt.  Self determination -  Hitler could argue that German minority wanted to become part  of Germany  May 1930 – Czech mobilized and war broke out Hitler had to back down and had a diplomatic struggle Potential world war over tiny strip of territory?
