A Red Oak high school teacher was chosen for interview regarding her perceptions of health, safety, and strengths of the community. The health issues identified by the teacher were obesity and prevalence of unhealthy food options outside of school. “I am noticing every year more and more students that are obese. This is concurrent with the many fast food places that are their options. In fact, directly across from our high school is a Whataburger, a donut shop, and a tamale factory. These students do not know what a healthy meal is, they need education on how to prepare meals, how to stay active, how to read food labels” (TG, personal communication, January 19, 2019). The safety issues per the high school teacher included, “I have noticed that we have a lot of the older generation in the community. I consider myself very lucky to still have my mother, she is living with me and my family. But there are others that still live alone. With the new construction and houses being built, it seems the crime rate has increased. With this increase has been more crimes against the older generation, some dying from injuries from trying to fight off their attacker. Some are robbed of their possessions, and these people are on fixed incomes and cannot afford to have some things fixed, so they do without” (TG, personal communication, January 19, 2019). When questioned about the strengths of the community, RT added “I am very proud of my church community. If there is a need, we get together to see what we can do to help. A good example was when the tornado hit in 2015. Lots of people were displaced, especially those who lived in trailer homes, one of the churches was nearly destroyed. Through the efforts of the community, churches and other organizations, we pulled together, put aside any religious differences, and came together as one. In fact, the very next year, a motorcycle ministry puller together a benefit and raised over $10,000 to give back to the community. We have a strong community in Red Oak” (TG, personal communication, January 19, 2019). Analysis of Windshield Analyze and summarize your observations and the input from key informants. Survey and safety (1) issues for this community and strengthens of the community. Remember to cite personal communication as appropriate : Community health is very important, not only in Red Oak, but other areas as well. There is an increase in the older generation living alone due to loss of a spouse and/or other family members. Those uninsured, underinsured, and living on welfare cannot afford access to preventative care unless is it provided as community healthcare. Red Oak is in need of community healthcare to be provided and education of the public to decrease obesity and the complications thereof. The closest hospital is located south in Waxahachie, 20 to 30 minutes away depending on where a person resides The growing number of fast food places is alarming as there is a lack of healthier eating that is quick and available.
