problem can exist when project team members are part of another department or in another region, their loyalties to immediate department heads can cause them to give secondary priorities to a project and project manager. Depending on the size and scope of the project it is always best to have an individual contributor running the project. In this solution it would be better for the department manager to hand off the responsibilities of the project to one of the direct reports. This will ensure that the project has the individual’s full attention and the progress of it is being reported to the department manager. Trust but validate is the mantra of a project manager. Most projects will include elements where the project has to rely on people in different departments or regions. A good project manager will have these people bought into the ultimate goal. This will create a desire to have the project completed regardless of other competing work functions. Ultimately each organization will determine if project-based or non-project-
5based organizational structures are best. Both of these types of projects present their own unique challenges in managing the projects and both require a different method of communication.
