The thing that he uses most dynamically and forcefully is deep focus  photography Depth of field refers to how space appears to us in a photograph or a movie  or a video Everything in the shot is in crisp focus He likes to set up shots that will use all the space: foreground, midground,  background  He likes to have a lot of things going on o He also likes the audience to look at what they want to look at You see lots of things in detailed view The duration of shots that are in this film are longer than what was expected  A long take He likes shots that have a long duration before he moves to the next shot He tends to avoid conventional editing He’ll set up the master/establishing shot and move the camera from time to  time, but he’s going to stick with that large view o He will however move things around o Have people in the background move to the foreground for dramatic  purpose This is called a block shot o 4b on plot segmentation in 1871, when thatcher visits Mr. and Mrs. Kane, Charlie is 8 years old Snow becomes a running motif throughout the film It is a key to the vocabulary that welles is moving It is a textbook example of deep focus scenes Three components that conform to a triangle

o Apex is the little boy playing outside o In the midground Mr. Kane is  o In the close up or foreground is Mr. Thatcher and Mrs. Kane The sense of displacement that Kane feels begins here His mother, who has good intentions, has no idea the affect that will have on  the boy Kane is often framed within a frame He is contained by window frames, door frames, mirrors and all sorts of  architectural figures In this image his freedom is being circumscribed and his future is being  predetermined Scene 4e o We are moving 58 years into the future o Same set up, but the set is much deeper Here Kane is in the background just as he was 58 years ago He’s right below some windows, illustrating the  containment of Kane o His mother signed her son away to the banker; 58 years later Kane  signs his assets away to the banker Documents being signed by is a recurring theme within this film Kane is a character study
