Empire building reached its zenith with the advent of Mughals. They brought the change in design themes from the spiritual to the corporeal and courtroom. The Tajmahal, Minature paintings captured patterns of flowing robes, glittering jewellery and ornate architecture. With the end of Mughal rule, the loss of royal patronage and the advent of British colonialism, India entered a period of economic impoverishment and cultural transfusion. As a nation, we learned that design cannot be imposed on a culture but that it must result from a natural coherence between the individual and his/her social milieu. After India gained independence from the British in 1947, the country entered into a phase of rapid industrialization brought on by the era of science and rationality. Five-year plans were conceived and implemented from 1950 awards. Not surprisingly, the focus of the first five-year plan was on increasing agricultural production. The second plan was devoted to industrial development and concerned itself with infrastructural demands of the various industries. Many industries were set up in public sectors, including steel, energy and mining, often with help from industrially advanced countries. With the increase in demand for products and the availability of raw materials and government support, new industries in the private sector emerged to make products in collaboration with foreign companies, which provided technical assistance. Western multinationals began to set up production units both with and without local equity participation. The Indian designer is an heir of two traditions. Tradition one is influenced by the German Bauhaus. Tradition two is a national and deeply rooted attitude of respect for 114 New Educational Perspectives for Designers and Managers older people. India was the first developing country to introduce design as a professional discipline an experiment that began in the 1970s with the founding of the National Institute of Design (NID) at Ahemedabad and then the industrial design centre at the Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay. The NID has been a pioneer in industrial design education, following the principles and methods of the Bauhaus and the Hochschule f r Gestaltung Ulm (HfG Ulm) in Germany. It has had a key role in developing Indian design excellence. Among its other activities, the NID has introduced events around the theme Designed in India, Made for the World . The NID s graduates have made a mark in key sectors of commerce, industry and social development by taking role of catalysts and through thought leadership. Since the NID has a broad spectrum of design faculties and disciplines, a multidisciplinary approach is inherent in the scheme of things. Its strategic design management (SDM) programme draws upon several design disciplines available at NID, involving the faculties of industrial design, communication design, textile, apparel
