That's it for this demonstration. In this demo, we talked about configuring a wireless network connection. We talked about the difference between a broadcasting and non-broadcasting wireless network. Then we looked at the various ways you can connect to these networks. For a broadcast network you can use the wireless icon in the notification area. For a non-broadcasting network you need to come into the network and sharing center and then manually set up a new connection to the wireless network. Infrared, Bluetooth, and NFC 0:00-0:26 Wi-Fi communication may be the most common wireless communication technology but it isn't the only one. There are actually several other wireless communication methods that are used in the technology world. In this lesson we're going to take a look at three more wireless communication technologies that create short range wireless connections to transmit information. Let's start by looking at infrared communication. Infrared 0:27-1:52 Infrared or IR is a communication technology that uses light waves to transmit informationthroughout the air. The light used by IR devices is just past the visible red light spectrum. So it's invisible to us. The simplest example of an IR device is a TV remote. When you press a button on a TV remote IR light is emitted from the front of the remote and picked up by an IR receiver on the TV. Infrared can operate in one of two modes. A TV remote is an example of diffuse mode or scatter mode IR. With diffuse mode, the transmitter sends infrared light out in a broad wave. This type of mode has a range of a couple meters and doesn't require a direct line of sight to the receiver. It's possible for a few obstacles to be in between. The second mode is line of sight or LOS mode. LOS mode uses a very narrow beam of infrared light.Because of this, LOS mode requires devices to have a direct line of sight with each other. There can't be any obstructions in between. And because the beam is so narrow, devices have to be lined up appropriately. LOS mode has a range of just under one meter. Infrared is used with some portable devices such as tablets and smart phones. Some printers even use IR for communication. However, because of its line of sight and distance limitations, most devices use Bluetooth to communicate wirelessly. Bluetooth 1:53-2:44 Bluetooth is a short range wireless communication technology used by a lot of different devices. It was originally invented in 1994 and has since gone through several versions that are specified by the Bluetooth special interest group or SIG. Bluetooth uses radio waves that operate between 2.4 and 2.485 gigahertz. Most Bluetooth devices have a range of about 30 feet. The nice thing about Bluetooth is the fact that is able to operate without needing a direct line of sight between devices. There can even be some obstructions between devices such as thin walls. This versatility has made Bluetooth the short range communication method of choice for devices like wireless headphones, speakers, wireless keyboards and mice, smart watches, printers, game controllers and the list goes on and on.
