o CHO spares body N instantly. i.e.- If put on a starvation diet for 24hr and then given 1) 20g glucose or 2)the equivalent amount of NRG in fat we would find more N excreted in the urine under the fat diet o If feeding HFD and no N in the body, it takes ~1-2wks before the body adapts to use NRG from that fat efficiently and spare body N from breakdown. When you spare body N you’re gluconeogenesis (syn of glucose from AAs) Fat diet does not spare as much body N. But if maintained for a 7-14d they’re ~ equal. It just takes the body longer to adapt to use dietary fat as its NRG source on a CHO free diet b/c it doesn’t work by the same mechanism of insulin GLUCONEOGENIC CAPACITY OF DIFFERENT AAs - Gluconeogenic capacity of the different AAs o Leu and most of the Lys is almost all ketogenic o Vs. Ala which is almost gram for gram convertible to glucose. Might be b/c when you deaminate Ala, you get pyruvate and we know that you can make glucose out of 2 pyruvates by simple reverse glycolysis REVIEW OF PROTEIN AND EAA REQUIREMENTS - Main objective of this section: describe the methodologies for delineating total protein needs o Remember you have 2 requirements in the body: 1. Requirement for total protein. Out of that, a certain amount has to be in the form of EAA. So the total prot reqs for the indiv is made up of meeting your EAA reqs 2. Requirement for non-essential N to make NEAAs § Total protein requirements for an individual = non-essential N sources + EAA o Also have 2 other requirements based on stage of body’s maturity : 1. Requirement for maintenance and of that certain amount has to be EAAs These needs a lot lower based on kg BW 2. Extra N as requirement for growth to lay down more protein mass

SFLORES_3/24/2014 43 Once you reach adulthood and you’re no longer putting on more protein mass of the body, you only need to meet maintenance needs (#1 above) which are <<< growth needs when based on kg BW That's why the needs for adults for total protein and EAAs are typically always lower than they are for growth METHODS TO MEASURE PROTEIN & AA REQUIREMENTS N BALANCE STUDIES - Traditionally, N balance studies used for measuring the amount of N needed every day to remain in N balance (which is how we then can figure out how much prot needed every day) o N balance is equal to the difference between N in and N out. N balance in adul ts is usually = 0 b/c we’re not growing anymore (unless pregnant, or breast-feeding when you’re in + balance ) o Example of an N balance study: Start off with a group of indivs or animals and you make up a complete diet. with a certain amount of added protein, typically start off with a low amount that we know is not going to meet your requirements K eep track of all the N you’re eating in the form of protein in the food and you measure that every 24 hours (N in) Every 24 hrs urine and stool collected Then use simple mathematical expression to determine how much N is in the urine and the stool, = N excreted (N out)

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
