THE EUROPEAN COLONIES For this consult the map on page 43 of the text and be sure you have a good idea about which European country took where. In general: -UK took the most and best land in terms of resources in Northeast Africa, East Africa, few rich areas of West Africa and most of Southern Africa. -France took large but less rich land in terms of resources in Northwest Africa, West Africa, and Madagascar in East Africa. -Belgium took the vast and rich Congo in middle Africa -Portugal took vast and rich Angola and Mozambique, also in middle Africa. THE NEW BOUNDARIES Some of the new African boundaries were senseless, because they split the same people into different European territories. For example, the Gambia (UK) was carved inside Senegal’s (French) belly. The same people were now split between UK, and France in Gambia and Senegal respectively. AFRICAN RESPONSES TO CONQUEST -RESISTANCE/RESISTERS. These were African states which picked up arms and fought with the colonizers. All except Ethiopia lost. Some examples are: Ethiopia Zulu (S. Africa) Mahdi (Sudan) Ndebele and Shona (Zimbabwe) Maji Maji rebellion (Tanzania) Asante (Ghana) -COLLABORATION/COLLABORATORS. These were African states who made a decision after careful considerations not to fight immediately, but co-operate instead. They too lost in the end. Examples were: Buganda [Baganda] – (Uganda) Fulani/Hausa (Nigeria) Lozi (Zambia) Barotse (Botswana). COLONIAL RULE IN AFRICA
