This greatly benefitted Indian relations with Afghanistan as India originally supported theNorthern Alliance in the civil war against the Taliban who were supported by the Pakistanis. This continues to make it difficult for the US to align Pakistan’s goals with Americas. The US’s goal of removing the Taliban and having a secure and stable Afghanistan is not good for Pakistan as they perceive the Northern Alliance placating to amore Indian view. Pakistan also believes that the United States will eventually leave the region and the Taliban will take over again so continuing to support the Afghan Taliban or at least not allowing the US to enter Pakistani territory to attack them will still keep theconnection open. This is exactly why Pakistan has had reluctance in going after the Haqqanni Network in Pakistan. They perceive these groups as a counter to the Indian supported North Alliance and therefore will continue to support them counter to American efforts in the region. After the Indo-Pakistani war of 1971 the Simla agreement stipulated that “that thetwo countries are resolved to settle their differences by peaceful means through bilateral negotiations.” Therefore the US cannot mediate any agreement between the two parties nor can the United Kingdom, both of which assisted in previous agreements. However in the past the United States has been able to play a role to bring back parties to the negotiating table to discuss the issues. I believe the United States should have a very active role in ending the conflict between the two parties. The United States in the next century is planning on having a very strong relationship with India for international trade for defense especially as a hedge against China. For the next decade or so the United States will have to remain close to Pakistan to keep an eye on their nuclear arsenal and to make sure that the AfPak region does not become an area for terrorist organizations to base themselves. Therefore since both of these nations are strategically important to the United States it is in the United State’s interest for them to create a peace deal with one another. Creating this peace deal will lead to a more stable Afghanistan for one, which will make NATO’s efforts much easier in establishing a stable Afghanistan. Also a peace deal between India and Pakistan will lead a more secure South Asia and the world has a
whole. By defusing the tensions each other’s nuclear arsenals will not be pointed at one another and both militaries will not be as trigger-happy. Finally with a peace deal comes a growth in the economies of each country. A more developed Pakistan will allow the USto be less concerned about their government being overthrown by a strong Jihadist group and taking Pakistani nuclear weapons. This is better than it reads. Jeremy, you need to work on tightening up your prose! Although you get most—but not all—of the points I was looking the overall tone is unsophisticated. Use short declarative sentences. Make sure each sentence in a paragraph builds upon the previous one. A-Select what you consider to be the most important contemporary political development or trend in eitherBangladesh, Sri Lanka or Nepal and explain why youthink it is the most important?
