Symbol for the movement The design sums up all of Corb’s ideas ARCH 212 Notes- Oct 26 The Codification of Modern Architecture Bauhaus was meant to teach people how to think in a way o Most importantly, the Bauhaus introduced a whole new curriculum o Believed architecture was a part of a larger craft, so students learned other subjects first, before anything to do with architecture o Opened in 1919, closed by Nazis in 1933, directors: Gropius, Meyer, Mies Johannes Itten, one of the first faculty o Dressed differently, spoke differently, shaved head; completely changed way of thinking o Taught course of materiality, but with different materials, like tree bark Bauhaus, Dessau, by Walter Gropius 1926 o Purposefully asymmetrical, but a composition o Had no decoration, used typeface o Similar characteristics of the Schroeder House o Type of design that function follows form o The idea of transparency played key role for them Saw that society needed to be transparent Also used transparency in buildings- glass grossly used o The question of what is the basic needs for living seen in the student apartments CIAM institution o The important thing about it is that it brought together French and German speaking designers o They began to codify modern architecture o “Battle Plan” drawn by Le Corbusier for the La Saraaz meeting 1928 was response to Corb’s design being rejected o Known for their published works, Befreites Wohnen (Liberated Living) Gave access to these new ideas o “The Athens Charter” by Le Corbusier, 1938 Henry Russell Hitchcock wrote “Modern Architecture: Romanticism and Reintegration” o Wrote thesis that American architecture was at a complete dead end, while European architecture was on to the right thing o He created an argument that was just an opinion, but he did it really well o In 1932, “International Style” exhibit at the MoMA, NY Exhibit to show that European has the best architecture Center was Corb and Mies, and in back corner was some American ideas MoMA published the exhibit, Hitchcock and Philip Johnson wrote a book, and termed International Style Museum of Modern Art, NYC by Philip Goodwin and Edward Durell
