Author biography Susan McDaniel is Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Global Population and Life Course with active research interests in international health and global issues. She is the Prentice Research Chair in Global Population and Economy and Professor of Sociology at the University of Lethbridge, Canada. Her current research is on well-being across the life course in comparative perspective, demographic ageing, generational relations, family change and care globally.

McDaniel 841 Résumé La sociologie de la santé et de la maladie est animée par des débats autour de la meilleure compréhension des rôles complexes que jouent les facteurs et les structures sociales dans la santé individuelle et le bien-être. De nouvelles perspectives, à la fois empiriques et conceptuelles, ont conduit à des approches novatrices dans l’analyse et ont permis de créer de nouveaux cadres conceptuels Trois exemples illustrent cette tendance: le gradient social de la santé, la perspective de santé de la population, et l’importance du tissu social dans le bien-être sociétal et individuel. Cependant certaines énigmes demeurent irrésolues: les relations entre santé et inégalités sociales, la stagnation de l’espérance de vie malgré les améliorations socio-économiques ou les méthodes pour réduire les disparités et les inégalités de santé. Estas nuevas perspectivas son simultáneamente empíricas y conceptuales, dan lugar a enfoques innovadores para el análisis, así como a nuevos marcos conceptuales. Tres ejemplos ilustran esta tendencia: el gradiente social de la salud, la perspectiva de salud de la población, y la prominencia del tejido social tanto para el bienestar individual y como para el bienestar social. Sin embargo, algunos enigmas permanecen, tales como de qué modo las desigualdades sociales se perpetúan, por qué las mejoras socioeconómicas no siempre producen aumentos en la esperanza de vida, y cómo reducir las disparidades y desigualdades en la salud.
