2) The most important factors that pulled women to Tijuana were the economic life and education for their children. Leaving their home villages meant they had the opportunity to make more money and live a better lifestyle. The opportunities to children in Tijuana were also greater because here they could get a better education and then perhaps break away from the factory lifestyle of their parents. selected a representative that would compete for the crown, making the women feel and know that she was the most beautiful. The sporting events brought the women together for a common goal and were a means of distracting them during their free time. 2) The pageant of “Queen of the Maquiladora” obviously shows how important beauty is. This competition, however, values nothing but beauty. The prettiest woman is the winner and nothing else seems to be taken into account. Competition also allows the women to, in a sense rebel against each other rather than against management. 3) These activities distract the women from how bad their lives really may be. They were created to boost productivity and remind the women of the femininity, how they should be preoccupied by their looks and health, and how they should be subordinate to men. (75)
