I have decided to prohibit the use of electronics (i.e. laptops, tablets, smartphones) in my classes . You are only allowed to use them at the beginning of each class for Top Hat to record your attendance and also when I explicitly give permission to use them for certain tasks. Grading: 1. Assignments: 10% There will be multiple problem sets assigned to you to be answered in written form. Assignments are posted on Canvas, and are due at the beginning of class on the specified due date. These assignments are to be completed in groups of three, you create a group at the beginning of the term (by Jan. 14 th ) and use the same group throughout the term. No groups of four will be allowed, but groups of two may be permitted. A hardcopy needs to be submitted on the specified due date, single submissions and email submissions are not accepted. Not all the assignments will be graded, and only the ones graded will contribute to the 10%. For example, if you get six assignments throughout the semester, I might only grade two, three, or all of them, and the ones graded will contribute an equal weight to the 1 0%. You won’t know in advance which assignments will be graded and therefore you need to put in an equal amount of time and effort into all of them. 2. Midterm (Wednesday, February 13 th 80 minutes): 30% If you miss the midterm and provide a valid medical note, the weight will be added to your final. If you miss the final and have a valid doctor note, you will be given another chance to retake the exam. If you miss any of the exams and do not provide a valid medical note, you will be given a grade of zero for that exam. You cannot shift the weight of one exam onto the other if you do not do well on one of the exams. 3. Final Exam: 47% Date and time TBA. 4. Class Attendance: 5% All students are required to attend the lectures. The attendance will be recorded in every lecture using the Top Hat software that you need to purchase (see below for more details). For each lecture you miss without a legitimate excuse you will lose 0.5%. For those who miss more than 5 lectures throughout the semester (without a legitimate excuse) they will lose the entire 5%. 5. Tutorial Attendance: 3% Tutorials will involve reviewing materials, solving practice questions, solving assignment questions, and quizzes. All students are required to attend the tutorials . The attendance will be recorded in every tutorial using the Top Hat software that you need to purchase (see below for more details). For each tutorial you miss without a legitimate excuse you will lose 0.5%. Quiz questions include multiple choice, true/false, or numerical questions which will be administered using Canvas. Some quizzes might involve written questions that you will hand in at the
