Daisy Valero PED 3301 John Kelly or activities that kindle a student’s curiosity or inspire him or her. Teachers can discover their students’ interests by determining what topics they enjoy or which activities they engage in outside of class. Teachers can ask students to: discuss their interests, write a journal entry about themselves, complete an interest inventory and participating in classroom ice-breaker activities. Learning profile refers to a student’s preferred method of learning new information or skills (e.g., visually, hands-on, through deductive means) and to environmental factors that influence a student’s learning (e.g., small group, bright lights, no distractions). A student’s profile can also be influenced by gender and culture. Teachers can assess a student’s preferred method of learning by: administering an inventory or questionnaire and observing the student during class. Sometimes the best way to learn about your student is simply by listening to their conversation with their peers. Teachers should also take note of each student’s affect, or emotions and feelings. Teachers should strive to understand how students feel about themselves and what makes each of them feel successful or discouraged. 4. Ms. Hasbro has taught high-school Spanish for ten years. She would like to start differentiating instruction and needs to make some changes. a. Explain why each of Ms. Hasbro’s classroom practices listed below is not a differentiated practice. Delivers instruction primarily by lecturing: This is a teacher- centered instructional method used frequently with whole-group instruction. It does not accommodate students’ different learning styles and meet all students’ skill level. Does not permit students to retake tests they have failed: If students fail the test the first time they take it then this may mean that they simply need more time to master the material. Students learn at different rates, and this is not a differentiated practice because this assessment process does not meet the students’ needs. Records zeros for missing assignments: A zero on an assignment can really affect students’ averages, and therefore their grade will not be an accurate representation of what they have achieved, but a presentation of the time they failed to hand in an assignment.
