Tells us that the future of international relations is controlled by scholars/politicians/media o Scholars because they feed information to politicians o Politicians because they are the news that the media portrays o Media because they have the ability to censor anything that they wish 7. A question about the development of the field of international relations: How do you explain the consistency of theories and worldviews in IR theory from Thucydides to the present as illustrated by Robert Kaplan in Warrior Politics ? When has maintainer realism been challenged? Why did these challenges fail? Is this paradigm likely to be challenged in the future?

Maintainer Machiavellianism has been a prevalent ideology since the times of  Thucydides who was a hard core realist. He believed that might superseded right, and  that the realism was the only ‘right way’. Robert Kaplan resounds these thoughts in his  book ‘Warrior Politics’ where he outlines why our society has necessitated that the only  functional system can be a capitalist, realist structure of governance and growth. Hence  the consistency in this Machiavellian train of thought has somewhat persisted  unchanged throughout the ages because these theories recognize that humans  ultimately value individual progress more then the community’s growth and so the  realist view that promotes hard work and take home rewards will always be a  formidable one.  Maintainer realism, however, was threatened during the Cold War, when the U.S.S.R  famously tried to contain the growing power of the U.S.A by trying to persuade multiple  countries to switch over to the social democratic form of governance. The Cold War  escalated in significance and tore the world into two distinct coalitions that were pitched  on opposite sides- capitalist and communist. But finally, The U.S.S.R succumbed  because it was a battered state that was facing the heat economically and could not  keep up with its western rival, even when it came to the Arms race. This was partly  because capitalism was poised with potential for success because of the surge of  globalization and the urge of countries to get back on their feet and even dominate the  market after World War II.  The paradigm of maintainer realism is the powerful ideology in domestic and

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
