o In a speech, all other positive words are less than the "most" positive word Ex: in political campaigns, the slogan is the God term Obama's first campaign: hope, change. Devil term o In a speech, these are the words that people see as bad or wrong Ex: stop the war Has a negative connotation Five parts of the pentad Act o The communication act, what was done, what message was chosen Ex: speech, rally, protest, sit-in, etc. Scene o Where did this happen? What moment in time? Social situation Appreciate the context Agent o The person who preformed the act Agency o Correlated with Aristotle's style o How the act was accomplished o The language that was used Why/how were certain god and devil terms used? Purpose o The goal of the act The truth cannot be trusted, we must figure out what the speaker is really implying.
