Some of the negative effects of smoking cigarettes and being exposed to secondhand smoke include various forms of cancer, heart disease, strokes, lung disease, and reproductive issues. Smokeless tobacco is safer for the community but still poses the risk of oral health problems, including cancer, to the user (“Tobacco Use,” 2014). It is a goal of Healthy People 2020 to reduce the percentage of adults who smoke cigarettes to 12% and those who use smokeless tobacco to 0.2%. In Sentinel City, teen pregnancy rates, among girls ages 15-17 years of age, have increased over the past year from 199 to 475 (Sentinel City, 2018). Teen pregnancy is associated with negative consequences for not only the teens involved but also taxpayers and the community as a whole. Teen mothers are less likely to graduate high school or obtain their GED, make an average of $3,500 less per year than those who wait until their 20’s to reproduce and tend to collect almost twice as much federal aid for almost twice as long. It is estimated that the economic burden of teen pregnancy in the U.S. is approximately $9.1 billion per year. Children

Sons of teenage mothers have a higher chance of becoming incarcerated and daughters are more prone to becoming teenage mothers themselves (“Family Planning,” 2014). It is a goal of Healthy People 2020 to reduce the rates of pregnancy among adolescent females between the ages of 15-17 years old in order to help decrease the prevalence of the afore mentioned negative effects to both society and the individual. C2. Community Resources Sentinel City has many community resources available that can help to decrease the rate of teen pregnancy and its consequences. The Better Health Clinic offers various reproductive health services including access to contraceptives and pregnancy testing and counseling. The Parks and Recreation Department offers several educational programs to help keep adolescents busy like swimming, nutrition, city sports and after school programs. In the even of teen pregnancy, the Community Center offers parenting classes open to all parents four times weekly and has classes specifically designed for teens twice weekly (Sentinel City, 2018).
