applications you can manually specify the size of the paging file and when you do you can set an initial size, as well as a maximum size. And if you choose to do this the paging file will be initially created using the minimumsize parameter that you specify and then it will be allowed to grow automatically as needed until it reaches the maximum size that you specify. As a general rule of thumb, the amount of space you should dedicate to the paging file, should be approximately one to one and a half times the amount of physical RAM installed in the computer. However, be aware that this rule is not a hardened fast rule. If the system has very little RAM installedthen the paging file is going to have to be much larger. It might need to be two times the size of the system RAM or maybe even more. On the other hand if the system has a huge amount of

physical RAM installed, then the paging file doesn't need to be as big it can actually be quite small, maybe even half the size or less of the physical RAM. In addition to size you can also specify where you want the paging file to be located. You can improve performance a little bit on the system by actually moving the page file off the system hard disk driveto a different drive in the system. In fact, if you have many hard disks available in the system, you can also improve performance a little bit by actually creating multiple paging files, one on each hard disk drive; so we spread it across multiple hard disks. Summary 6:41-6:51 That's it for this lesson. In this lesson we talked about virtual memory. We talked about the difference between physical memory and virtual memory. We reviewed how virtual memory works on Windows. And the we talked about how you manage virtual memory settings on a Windows system. Managing the Paging File 0:00-0:21 In this demonstration, we're going to talk about managing the Windows Paging File. To do this we come down to the Windows icon, right click, and then select system. Now we could've arrived at the same screen by opening control panel, going to system and security, and then selecting system.Either option will get you to this same screen. Modify Performance Settings 0:22-3:49 From here we want to access our advanced system settings, I'll select that link. The system properties dialogue is displayed, and on the advanced tab we want to modify our performance settings. Because notice over here that one of our performance settings is virtual memory. The paging file is basically Microsoft's implementation of virtual memory. We'll click on settings and then go to the advanced tab. Essentially what happens with a paging file is that when data in RAM, currently loaded in RAM, is getting a little bit stale. Meaning that it's just been sitting there for a while, and it's not being actively used. Windows will automatically take that stale data and move it out to the paging file on the hard disk drive.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
