reaction. If the container containing ammonia gas comes into contact with heat, an exothermic reaction results and could even result in a fire outbreak. Ammonia is stored as compressed gas, and any heat contact would result in an explosive rupture and sudden release of vast amounts of ammonia gas. The gas combusts in the presence of an external ignition source, producing poisonous nitrogen oxides which are highly toxic to humans when it enters the respiratory system. When ammonia dissolves in water, it releases heat. Accidental release of ammonia gas into the atmosphere calls for immediate responses and first aid procedures to minimize the gas’ harmful effects. The victim should be moved immediately to an area with plenty of oxygen supply to prevent breathing difficulties and consequently olfactory arrest. Artificial respiration would be required in some instances to assist in breathing. The skin and eyes should then be flushed with a lot of water for a duration of not less than fifteen minutes.
