water peak was additionally noted at 1.52 ppm. Finally, the literature melting point for 9-phenyl-9-fluorenol is 93-95°C, while the observed melting point is 73-78°C. This discrepancy can be understood in the explanation that leftover reactant remained in the product, effectively dragging the melting point of the product down. The crude percent yield is 67.13% and the final percent yield after recrystallization is 32.17%. No side products were observed in the reaction; however, if proper methods were used and all the leftover reactant reacted, better yields would have been observed. Under consideration of the IR spectrum, NMR spectrum, and melting point, the product can be finalized as 9-phenyl-9-fluorenone with the addition of Grignard Y.
