Barcode scanning technology is the tool used for health system to promote safety initiative, which verifies double checks and the six rights of safe medications administration. Barcode scanning also allows the nurse to partially match the administration of blood products our patients by ensuring a valid product
order and unit number match. Utilizing BCMA helps to perform real time charting of medications and confirm the six rights of medication administration. Once a medication order is verified, the nurse is able to access the medication for administration. The BCMA process starts immediately thereafter. The nurse must perform positive patient identification by scanning the barcode located on patient’s ID band “RIGHT PATIENT” is the first of the six rights of safe medication administration. Review the medication packaging and label for correct medication and strength, by comparing it to the medication on medication administration record. Scanning the barcode will do the following right medication, right time and right dose, verify the route, and as well as other comments. This is a safety step in the right direction with patient safety and ensuring when is giving the top stand care in the New Orleans region of health care. Monitoring of BCMA compliance reports will help each nursing unit and ancillary department capture the specific compliance data. Medication Administration Record (MAR) Medication Barcode Compliance will show real –time data, MAR Patient Barcode Compliance Report can also show real time data.
