now. She was also one of the first women to own a show and one of the first black people to own a show
as well.
To what extent has digital technology impacted the way Oprah communicates and
interacts with her
audience?
I think technology has only been beneficial for both Oprah and her audience. Now thanks to new
technology such as her OWN app that allows you to watch all of the shows available on her network at
any time, her website, oprah.com, offers clips of her own life stories, interviews, product
recommendations and sneak peaks of her network’s shows. Since the actual Oprah Winfrey Show
stopped airing years ago these new platforms still allow audiences to feel connected to and up to date
with the star. She stays up to date with social media, tweeting to over 40 million followers while another
16 million follow her on Instagram. These platforms give a much more personal look into her life, not as
much business content like that found on the website.
How would you assess Oprah’s abilities at encoding her messages when she was holding court with
her audience during the Oprah Winfrey Show? Use evidence from the case to support your answer.
