Nap recognized 2 issues that needed to be settled immediately: the role of the church and the role of money °The role of the church He made an agreement with pope Pius VI—concordat. The Vatican signs concordats, not treaties.
*****The French government (Bonapart) will name a list of 5 or 6 people who are clearly qualified for bishop and then the pope choses from that list. °Who appoints the bishops in France? Napoleon or Pius? Pius makes the final choice but it is both. Is it a deal the pope can live with? yes°** missing notes October 6 °°October 8, 2015°Industrial Revolution insinuated the ideas of liberty and equality 3 things required for an industrial revolution oReplace human and animal work with mechanical energy oProduction begins to take place according to the factory method oCreating towns around factories called “mill towns” °Great Britain was the first country to have the industrial revolution They had the geography to do this—rivers and not many mountainsYou must have iron to make machines. To get iron you need coal and iron ore. Both are very heavy so it was so hard to move along the land. Britain was an island so you could carry the heavy materials along water. Another geography advantage was the iron ore and coal were located close to the surface so you didn’t have to dig so far. They were also located close to each other.—in France there was plenty ofcoal and iron but they were located far apart. Another advantage: Britain pioneered a lot of ideas—created partnership which had limited liability. In a limited liability company you are only responsible for the money you invest. This made it safer for people to invest and these laws were pioneered in Britain. They pioneer technical universities oThey specialized in things like physics and chemistry oThey produced great inventors—you went there to become aninventor, not to study theologyFirst inventions were small things like spinning wheel which were powered manually and eventually they were powered by water.
1763-1775 James Watt invented the modern steam engine. This meant things could run away from rivers because the steam engine provided energy. Almost all of the industrial revolution was devoted to textiles. Post 1830 is when the rail road is invented The industrial revolution was not rapid, but took a long time for inventions to be made. Until you had the rail road, you could not move heavy things. °First factories were awful places and dark. They were kept damp and humid because if not, strings would tear due to dryness. This made workers have lung disease. There was no protection around the machine so injuries were common. The work day was lengthy 12-16 hours a day for males and females worked 10-14 hours a day and children worked 8-12 hours a day.
