Altogether, these myths uphold specific ideas that vouch for a patriarchal society while others prove to dismiss gender roles by including specific characteristics in the mythological figure that are often seen a trait only the opposite gender can possess. Although it is difficult to say a myth can fully reject patriarchy, because they all make the male figures seem more powerful in a way, an example of a myth that attempts to reject the gender roles of society is the story of Gaia and Ouranos. In “Hesiod’s Theogony,” Gaia is described as, “” (). An example of a myth that keeps up with patriarchy and traditional gender roles would be Rhea and Cronus’ relationship along with the how it changed after they had children. Similar to traditional gender roles, the male figure, Cronus dominates Rhea because he is in charge of major decisions, such as how the children are raised. In this story, Cronus inconsiderately swallows all of tttheir children as soon as Rhea gives birth so that they don’t grow up to turn against him and although Rhea doesn’t support that decision, she must obey him. By the time they are having their sixth child, Rhea had made a plan to prevent their son, Zeus, from being swallowed, which was to replace him with a stone in before Cronus would see and send Zeus to be raised far away.
