How to write an academic summary Summary In the article “ the global language”, Burleigh(2004) explains how English is spreading across the world. Burleigh (2004) argues that by 2015, half of the world’s population will be speaking or learning English. According to Graddol (n.d) as cited by Burleigh (2004, p.68), this is because “many governments are now introducing the teaching of English, even at kindergarten level, because of economic importance. Also, the number of primary school children and middle-aged people being taught the subject for the first time has gone up. Furthermore, many universities are also choosing to teach through English, with students expected to read and write very high-level subjects in English instead of their own languages.
